The championship is hosted by the Finnish Golf Union together with Vanajanlinna Golf and Country Club. The patron of the competition is the Finnish Minister of Housing, Jan Vapaavuori.
The International European Amateur Championship will be the highlight of the golf season in Finland. The competition will be played in great conditions on the beautiful course of Vanajanlinna Golf and Country Club located in Hämeenlinna, one of the Finnish golf capitals. The championship will be played as a 72-hole stroke play over four days, starting on the 4th of August and the winner will be announced on the 7th of August.
Apart from the glory of being crowned the European champion, the winner will also get to compete in one of the most valued golfing events of the world, the Open Championship. There will be 144 players taking part in the European Amateur, most of which come from European countries. The participating players will be chosen mainly according to the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).
The European Amateur will be followed daily in the Finnish television with the help of our national public service broadcasting company Yle.
The International European Amateur Championship has been played since 1986. The first player ever to win the title was Anders Haglund of Sweden. Since then the winners have included many names that are big in the professional golf today, such as Sergio Garcia of Spain (won in 1995), Carl Petterson of Sweden (2000) and irishman Rory McIlroy who won the European Amateur in 2006.
The best result for a Finnish player in this competition so far was seen in 2000, when Panu Kylliäinen took the second place. Last year the best Finn was Tapio Pulkkanen who ended up in the 17th place while the winner was Victor Dubuisson of France.
The championship has been played in Finland once before. The year was 1994 when Aura Golf in Turku hosted the competition. That year Stephen Gallacher of Scotland took the win.
