Antti Peltoniemi the president of the Finnish Golf union and President of the EGA has been pleased with how well the arrangements have succeeded so far. “I have been following about 20 different European Championships and I need to say that everything has been going perfectly.” Unfortunately the Finnish players have not quite reached the top of the result list.
Peltoniemi gives thanks to media´s interest for the competition: “Broadcasting the high lights of the competition on television is of course a big plus. I would say that media coverage has been better than in competitions like this in general.” Positive feedback goes also to Linna Golf and weather conditions. “We have been lucky that the weather changed after first day´s wind and rain.”
The course of Linna Golf has gotten a good response from the competitors as well. “Vanajanlinna and Linna Golf are a worthy arena for this annual, probably the most dignified amateur competition in Europe.” Peltoniemi also mentioned that the strong input of Finnish Golf Association´s personnel and all volunteers has had a great significance for the competition.
This week´s competition is already the fourth European Championship hosted in Finland this decade and Finland is ready to apply for competitions in the future as well.
Peltoniemi mentions also that playing in front of the home public might have caused some extra tension for Finnish golfers. “Of course we – players themselves, coaches, media and audience – had big expectations coming in to this competition. After three days my opinion is that the set goals for this tournament haven’t quite been reached."
